The Story of Jesus walking on the water begs a lot of questions. Why did Jesus leave them alone to begin with? Where was he when they were going through the storm? Why does He invite Peter to walk presuming He knows the outcome? What lessons does this have for us today?

Context

Matthew 14; Mark 6; John 6
What story preceded it?
Feeding 5000
People amazed
believe in him.
but...
John 6:14–15 ESV
When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
Disciples knew
crowd knew
Jesus messiah.
But He would not
force his throne.
they force for Him...
An army
overcome Rome
start with force
end with force
Others will obey...
Jesus understands
stops it.
Jesus withdrew to mountain
sends disciples away
sends crowd away.
Disciples feel
dreams within reach
frustrated
disappointed
resentful...
Get in boat
doubts enter
struggling with faith.
Context is everything.
While in boat
dark
empty
storm begins to brew
physically
emotionally

Where is Jesus?

They are
upset
confused
disheartened
fearful of future
Worst of all
Jesus is not there.
Many Question
Where is Jesus?
Where is he?
Verse said,
on mountain...
What is he doing there?
Mark 6:46 ESV
And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
last week
praying...
Top of prayer list...
Disciples...
They are
disgruntled
complaining
murmuring
frustrated (at Jesus)
Why did we listen to Him?
Should have continued.
Force Him King...
While they complain.
Jesus prays
for their hearts.
Mark makes this statement
after the storm story.
Mark 6:52 ESV
for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
Satan,
thinks he has them.
opportunity to
crush their spirit.
HUGE STORM.
The storm
emotional
spiritual
physical
What is Jesus doing?
praying (interceding)
Mark adds detail
Matthew John say
they in boat
storm came.
Mark says:
Mark 6:48 (ESV)
And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them...
What is Jesus doing?
watching.
How could he see?
dark
storm
far away
Matthew says:
Matthew 14:24 (ESV)
but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.
John adds:
John 6:19 (ESV)
When they had rowed about three or four miles...
How did Jesus see them?
Spiritual eye
Eye of prayer
Eye of God
Powerful Lesson:

1. Those who pray see through Darkness...

Allow me to elaborate:
Whether you pray or not
Darkness Comes.
Storm Come.
Frustration Comes.
Those who pray,
see through darkness.
not the end.
What next?
Mark 6:48 ESV
And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them,
Jesus
Sees them
Loves them
Prays for them
Goes to them.
We have
compassionate God
concerned God
active God
ministering God
Disciples scared
water coming over
strong wind
no progress
fear.
What time?
4th watch
3-6 am
Hours of toil
miles of rowing
feeling of failure.
We focus on Disciples
but where is Jesus?
Jesus
hiking down mountain.
dark
storm
no moon
no stars
no flashlight
no candle
Night vision
cant adjust
blackness
Story missing part
Jesus complaining
Jesus frustrated
Jesus murmuring.
Why not
talking about
terrible situation?
Too worried about disciples...

2. Those who pray walk through the storm...

If you pray
still gets dark
still storms
still have problems
frustrations exist
fears exist
Can still see!
Can still walk!
Some today,
going through a storm.
wind raging
pouring (problems)
water coming in
fear of sinking
Perhaps tempted to
look around the boat
ask the question:
Where is Jesus!!!
Let me tell you.
you are not alone.
He sees
He prays (intercedes)
He comes
You are precious
in His sight.
No storms alone.
Reminds me of
other story
Disciples in storm.
Fighting storm
engrossed in fight
wind
rain
water
bailing
Losing battle
fear of death
Finally mind say,
where is Jesus.
Jesus is there!!!
In The Boat!!!
They made short prayer:
Matthew 8:25 ESV
And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.”
Third lesson today:

3. Those With Christ Don’t Sink.

If you pray
darkness comes
storm comes
water in boat
fear of final loss.
With Christ
you don’t sink.
In our key story
Jesus was not in boat.
They though they were alone.
And it was over.
Jesus was coming...
Matthew 14:25 ESV
And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
continue
Matthew 14:26 ESV
But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear.

Jesus or Satan?

Sadly,
this is common.
People confuse
Jesus for Satan
Satan for Jesus.
How so?
Think about it.
from beginning.
Feed of 5000.
They believed
God calling them
force Jesus king.
They believed
Jesus wrong when
sent them away.
They had resentment at
the savior
one sent to bless.
The confused
Jesus with Satan.
For those who don’t
spend time in prayer.
vision is impaired.
Darkness comes.
Storm comes.
Resentment comes.
Sin comes.
Pride comes.
Don’t pray
we are blinded.
Things that blind
Own sin.
Our own pride.
Our own confidence in direction.
Discouraging circumstances.
Jesus not afraid
little storm
thunder and lightning.
Storms of life
(trials of life)
For Prayer-less
= spiritually disorienting
Jesus allows storm
doesn’t stop it
immediately.
allows time
allows struggle
Why?
hoping we
start to pray!!!
recognize our need!!!
see our blindness!!!
If you go storms,
hold on
turn to him
pray.
Opportunity for lessons.
Geoffrey and I
backpacking in storm
fun for a while
not so fun
Not all loss
chance to learn.
chance to practice.
chance to prepare.
Disciples think
Jesus is ghost
until he talks.
Matthew 14:27 ESV
But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
His Voice
they knew His voice.
John 10:27 ESV
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
Roundup with a Voice
How do we hear
the voice of God?
In the storm
Satan is trying to
confuse and deceive.
He tries to impersonate Christ
lead astray
dishearten and discourage.
Bible says:
2 Corinthians 11:14 ESV
And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
In the storm
must know his voice.
must focus on word.

Peter Walks on Water

Crazy part of story.
Matthew 14:28–29 ESV
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
Why?
What is purpose?
I said,
Jesus could see boat
miles away
in darkness
in storm
because
“those who pray see in darkness.”
Many are tempted to believe.
Only Jesus.
Not humans.
Not us.
Not “me”
This proves:
1. Those who pray see through Darkness...
2. Those who pray walk through the storm...
3. Those with Christ don’t sink.
Peter is human
he does it.
Matthew 14:30 ESV
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
Verse is interesting:
“When he saw the wind...”
He saw wind before.
He saw waves before.
He saw storm before.
He saw darkness before.
But while walking to Jesus
looking at Jesus.
Then suddenly,
attention changed.
not on Jesus
focused on storm!
Suddenly,
cant see through darkness
can’t walk in storm
begins to sink.
Why?
looking at storm.
not Jesus.

Happy Ending

Mark 6:51 ESV
And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded,
John adds:
John 6:21 ESV
Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
Storm Immediately Stop
They teleport!
What???
after all that?
He could teleport them???
Why did they have to go
through the storm???
Couple answer,
(not always true for you)
They partly created the storm.
Their choices.
They forcing their agenda.
Rejecting Jesus’ plan.
Resentment at Jesus orders.
They created spiritual storm!
Lessons to learn.
Not always true.
Not all storms
created by us.
Some simply
find us!
Even in those,
we need learn
see in darkness
walk in storm
trust God not to sink.
If you are not
in storm right now,
Be thankful.
Just wait,
there will be one.
Get ready.
If you are
in storm right now.
